How is the loose edge of satin fabric formed? How can it be prevented?

Addtime:2020/12/22

The loose edge of satin fabric refers to the slackness that occurs at both sides when a jet loom weaves polyester FDY (especially bright filament yarn) satin fabric, leading to unclear openings and difficulty in introducing the weft, which affects loom efficiency. Some factories adopt the practice of wrapping cloth layers on the nip rollers, but over time, this will cause damage to the winding rollers, bearings, bearing housings, and other components. Therefore, we should employ proactive and effective measures to eliminate this defect.
How are loose edges formed? There are several contributing factors.
① Improper selection of edge organization and reed count.
The side pattern with excessive interlacing points may not cause loose edges, but the intersection of the satin warp and side pattern is highly prone to wide warp phenomena. Therefore, many manufacturers prefer side patterns with fewer interlacing points. However, due to the difference in shrinkage rates between the side and ground patterns, loose edges may occur after a certain fabric length. Improper selection of side denting also leads to loose edges.
The wear on both sides of the jumbo rollers in the winding section.
During the operation of the loom, as the width of the weaving beam gradually decreases to match that of the cloth beam, the tension on both sides of the fabric becomes greater than that in the middle section. This results in relatively more wear on  these areas. Over time,   leading to a loosening of the fabric on both sides.
③ The warp yarns on both sides of the fabric beam inherently have a tendency to slacken. During the fabric beam preparation process—from the creel to the winding beam, from the winding beam to the sizing beam, and finally from the sizing beam to the fabric beam—the width of the warp sheet constantly changes. As a result, the warp yarns on the side sections undergo repeated stretching to a greater extent than those in the middle section, leading to a weaker tendency to recoil compared to the central area. Consequently, these side sections are more prone to slackening when unwinding on the loom.
④ Improper adjustment of loom process parameters causes water jet streams to collide with edge warp yarns during weft insertion, resulting in slackness of warp yarns on the water jet side.
(2) The following measures can be taken to address the issue of loose edges.
① Select the border weft pattern and the number of weft insertions appropriately. It is recommended to use a variable-weight plain weave, with the weft repeat determined through repeated trials on the loom, typically reaching 20~40. Alternatively, the border weft pattern may be omitted by increasing the number of weft insertions, but such products are often unpopular among customers.
② Regularly inspect the condition of the fluted rolls. Replace or repair promptly if wear (especially on both sides) or delamination is detected.
③ In the preparation of warp beams for various processes, efforts should be made to ensure the consistency of edge thread tension with the warp tension in the central area, reduce variations in the width of the warp sheet, and mitigate the bending angles of edge threads. For instance, adding a gathering plate between the beam and the width-determining reed, and evenly distributing the warp sheet segments in the first width-determining reed during sizing to minimize warp stretching.
④ Reasonable adjustment of loom technology should be made to avoid the impact of water flow on the edge warp. Additionally, the total tension of the warp yarn should not be excessive, and appropriately reducing the height of the back beam can also alleviate the issue of loose edges.
